Biography

  was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, , to parents with different professional backgrounds: his mother, Bose Ogulu, is a language translator, while his father, Samuel, manages a wedding company.

His maternal grandpa, Benson Idonije, was Fela Kuti’s longtime manager. Bose Ogulu eventually became ‘s manager. Growing up in Southern , he began making beats using FL Studio.

Ogulu attended Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Ogun State, before continuing his studies in London, England.

Rise to fame

Burna Boy rose to fame in 2012 after the release of “Like to Party,” the lead single from his debut studio album, L.I.F.E (2013).

His international profile skyrocketed in 2017, when he signed with Atlantic Records in the United States (and its parent company Warner Music Group worldwide) to release his third studio album, Outside.

Burna Boy reached big milestones in 2019 by winning Best International Act at the BET Awards and being named an Apple Music Up Next artist.

He also released his fourth studio album, African Giant, which won Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards and was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. In 2020, the awards continued as he was honored as African Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.
